President of Chicanos Latinos Unidos En Servicio (CLUES)
Area of work in public health:
CLUES is a nationally recognized provider of mental health, chemical health, employment, education and related human services for the Latino community in Minnesota. In 2003, CLUES was named the recipient of the Outstanding Healthcare Affiliate – Helen Rodríguez Trías award from the National Council of La Raza and the agency’s Distance Learning Program with the Government of Mexico, was recently noted in The Economist.
I played a key leadership role in stewarding two major health assessment reports on Minnesota’s Latino population, which has grown by 188% over the 1990 census. I have contributed to key health reports for Minnesota, The Commissioner of Health’s Social Condition on Health and Minnesota’s Health Disparities Report. In the Fall of 2003, Governor Tim Pawlenty appointed me to an 18 member Healthcare Cost Citizen’s Leadership Panel lead by former U.S. Senator David Durenburger. The Citizen’s Leadership Panel is charged with identifying solutions to reduce the growing cost of healthcare facing Minnesota.
I am a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship Award from Elizabeth Dole, President of the American National Red Cross. A graduate of the Minnesota Executive Program for Advance Strategic Leadership of the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. I hold holds a Master’s of Management and Administration degree, with an emphasis in strategic planning from Metropolitan State University. I have trained with individuals such as Dr. Edwards Deming and Dr. Stephen Covey. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with double majors in Sociology and Chicano Studies.
Personal information:
I am married. We live in Woodbury Minnesota. Both of us have an entertainment background and a major theatrical ballet I wrote and composed is under consideration for performance by a major Orchestra in Minnesota for the Summer of 2005.
What I would like to get out of this program:
