Area of work in public health:

I started my public health career in 1985 as a Communicable Disease Representative for the State of California Department of Health Services STD Control Program. As such, I conducted STD control case finding activities and investigations, performed laboratory visitations, and coordinated STD awareness activities in the cities of Santa Ana and Long Beach. In 1990, I was promoted to front line supervisor and assigned to the City of Berkeley Health Department. In 1991, I joined the County of Orange Health Care Agency as a Program Supervisor I, in charge of a Multi-Ethnic Health Education Program. This program conducts health education activities in various Asian and Pacific Islander and Latino communities. In 1996, I transferred to the Orange County Breast Cancer Partnership as the Project Coordinator. This program provides free breast cancer screening services and education regarding breast cancer early detection to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women. In 2001, I was promoted to Program Supervisor II, and was assigned to the Technical Assistance and Planning section of the Health Care Agency Health Promotion Division. In this position, I oversee a Cancer Detection Partnership, a Chronic Disease, and an Injury Prevention Program. In addition, I conduct special projects for the Division, participate in strategic planning and find new sources of funding for Division programs. In 2002, I also served as Manager for the Public Health Services Compliance Program, a temporary assignment. I have a bachelors’ degree in community health education from California State University, Long Beach, California, and a masters’ degree in Public Health (Health Services Management) from University of California, Los Angeles.

Personal Information:

My girlfriend, Gloria Giraldo, also works in public health, in the area of injury prevention. I like to travel, go camping, and go bicycling along the coast. I also like listening to jazz, going to concerts, and following South American soccer championships

What I would like to get out of this program:

I would like to sharpen my crisis management skills. As a health department representative, I am particularly interested in learning crisis communication techniques. I would also like to learn more about problem solving in times of crises. I expect to learn much from the presenters as well as from my peers. I can provide a Latin American perspective to the group and expect to benefit from the perspectives of others with diverse backgrounds.
