Managing in Turbulent Times: Emerging Leaders in Public Health

Alumni

Alana CuetoAlana Cueto, BS in Healthcare Management

Special Projects Coordinator
Associated Medical Schools of NY(AMSNY) & NYS Academic Dental Centers (NYSADC)

Area of work: Non-profit Public Health & Education

Alana began her career with AMSNY and its sister organization NYSADC in mid-December of 2004; prior to this she worked for several years at the NYU College of Dentistry and has over 10 years combined experience having worked in healthcare settings in underserved areas.

Alana currently serves as the program coordinator for the Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP), Minority Participation in Medicine Program, Minority Student Mentoring Conference, and the Minority Dental Faculty Development Program. With all these programs, her focus lies on reaching out and providing resources to minority students who have the dedication and the passion for medical and/or dental school but may not have the resources and guidance to get there. Alana strongly believes if we are to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities then we must mentor, educate and facilitate the path of our minority students, and faculty.

Alana is a recent graduate from NYU where she successfully obtained a BS degree in Healthcare Management. My future plans include pursuing a dual MBA/MPH degree, and she hopes to someday teach on a collegiate level.

Personal Information:

I was born and bred in New York ; although I have been residing in the State of New Jersey for the past 10 years. Besides working and going to school, my husband and 2-children: Wes (age 18) and Caryn (age 14) - keep me on my toes. We love traveling and exploring different cultures, and foods. We also enjoy Broadway Theatre, and concerts.

What I would like to get out of this program:

I am interested in learning more about establishing effective and successful programs that will help pave the road for tomorrow's health professionals. I would also like to improve on my leadership skills thus enabling me to evolve along with the challenging times.

I am very grateful for this opportunity and I enthusiastically look forward to meeting, sharing ideals and learning from my peers and mentors in this important program.
