Area of work: Operations Support Section

Steven Hairston serves as the Chief of the Operations Support Section in the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services. His section consists of the Communications and Training, Division Affairs and Planning Teams. He began his professional career as an intern with the Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission. Upon completion of his internship he became a Staff Associate at the National Center for State Courts and was recruited to North Carolina state government to develop a long range plan for the judicial system.

His responsibilties in the Division include developing the State Plan for mental health reform, disaster preparedness, response and recovery, overseeing the administrative rule-making process and managing special projects.

He is a graduate of Virginia Union University, Temple University, and Duke University-Program in Nonprofit Management. He is also a graduate of the NC Public Manager Program and has the designation of Certified Public Manager.

Personal Information:

Steve and his wife Ingrid are the proud parents of twin girls (Danielle and Lauren). He enjoys reading, trying to play golf and spending time with his family. Active in the community he serves as an Election Judge in Wake County, a member of the Board of the Trailwood Springs Home Owners Association, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Eastern Province and a national committee member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
