Sharon Marable, MD, MPH serves as the Assistant Medical Director, Division of Disease Prevention & Control and is the Medical Director, Office of Women's Health at the Rhode Island Department of Health. This leadership position facilitates access to primary care and the development of health promotion initiatives for all Rhode Islanders, with particular emphasis on underserved low-income persons, women and communities of color. Her public health and medical policy areas of focus include chronic disease, primary care, public health genetics, quality improvement and women's health.
Dr. Marable graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 1982. Following receipt of a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, she received a Master of Public Health degree from Boston University. Additional training includes a Community Oriented Primary Care Fellowship at Carney Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts .
Dr. Marable is a faculty member at Brown Medical School and participates on the Brown Medical School Committee on Multiculturalism where she mentors minority students in medicine. In May, 2005 she became President of the Rhode Island Public Health Association.
Dr. Marable's founding memberships in regional chapters of the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer and the National Black Women's Health Project, demonstrate a strong commitment to community volunteerism and advocacy. Marable provides primary care to patients at Providence Community Health Centers, Inc., on a voluntary basis. Moreover, she devotes many hours speaking to groups in community based venues about health care issues relevant to communities of color.

African American Art & Literature, Yoga, Meditation, Travel, reading inspirational books and listening to inspirational music.
What I would like to get out of this program:

Help me become more adept at managing and sustaining public health department programs, as well as community health initiatives, in an environment where financing public health is not always a priority.
