Program Specialist, The Ohio Commission on Minority Health

Area of work: Addressing health disparities among ethnic minorities

Tamira possesses a heartfelt interest in implementing programs and conducting research that focuses on ethnic minorities, women and children. She personally understands the need to focus on eliminating the health disparities within these specific groups through education, early prevention and research.

Talking about the health disparities is not enough for Tamira. In 2003, as Master of Public Health student with a concentration in Health Behavior and Health Promotion at The Ohio State University's School of Public Health, she took the initiative to promote healthy living by making a difference on campus and in the greater Columbus, Ohio community through the development of the Annual Minority Fitness & Health Professional Career Fair. The annual event continues to provide free health screenings, health education and information, and an opportunity for active involvement to over 600 attendees.

Tamira's belief in the African proverb, "To whom much is given, much is required," motivates her to utilize her blessings in order to help others. Tamira's up close look at the needs of others has given her insight into what it takes to communicate health information to the public successfully. That understanding, combined with her sincere drive to help the underserved, makes Tamira an ideal individual to lead health promotion and behavior efforts in our communities.

Personal Information:

I strongly believe laughter is good for the body, mind and soul. Cherishing the time spent with family and friends allows me to put this belief into practice. During my leisure time, I can be found exploring foods and performances at cultural festivals, enjoying various genres of music and dance at concerts, fulfilling my thrill for theatre at plays, or reading a good book/magazine. I implement my passion for public health into my personal life through regular exercise. I enjoy making exercise fun and my love for dancing allows me to do just that. I also enjoy expressing my love to family and friends through my cooking. I am a native of Lorain , Ohio.

What I would like to get out of this program:

Entering into the public health profession, I have experienced rewarding job experiences thus far including Program Coordinator of All Women, One Cause, Program Coordinator with The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute's Diversity Enhancement Program, and my current role as Program Specialist with the Ohio Commission on Minority Health. I am entering the Kellogg Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Health Program with a hunger and thirst to enhance my knowledge within the public health profession, share my experiences, and network and learn from my peers.
